Collaborations is one out of the numerous strategies artists employ to feed off on each other energy, satisfy the fan, and push the culture forward.
When this happens, they are done within the same genre or a related genre but I have been having a good time with Mainland Block Party and Jameson drink joint curate project which they titled “Confluence Project” for it eccentric features.
A potpourri of Apala, trap, Afrobeats, and alte with love coming atop the topical issue on the seven-track volume one of the project.
Only Buju and Alpha P had a song on this project other acts like Ladipoe, Terry Apala, BOJ, Fave Naeto C, and Joeyboy all had two tracks each.
The tracks were all recent, with some released three to four years ago, 5&6 by Naeto C is the oldest on the EP, it was released in 2011.
Nigeria has been battling with some divisive element in the last one decade or so, what this project might be doing is the unity it get to enhanced, artists across genre are coming together, exploring sounds, Adey and Sess the problem kid are on hand to tweak the sound, reproduce the beat, make it mellow for the fans, this is the first time such would be happening. Jameson and Mainland Block party team deserve some commendation for the eccentric idea which I learn has been in the work for more than a year.
The project art is a collage of different pop culture references in the country, the national theatre in Lagos, Ibadan Micra, Eyo masquerade, the three statues at Lagos outskirts, Benin crowed kid, Keke Marwa, hustler on the street. The artwork succinctly painted the picture of Nigeria.
Running for 17 minutes, Buju and Alpha P kicked off the project with their infusion of Mind game and Paloma, the story flows like a river, they run on each other’s energy. The opener was a marvelous way of starting.
Other tracks built upon this, BOJ and Fave explored house music for the medley of Tungba and Nobody but you, the second track maintained the Tungba tempo with Fave and BOJ bouncing on each other energy. The lines are assuring while the voice is not, I can’t hear what she is saying, she gives a Cynthia Morgan vibe on this tune like she was in a state of intoxication.
Naeto C and Joeyboy were on the bouncy ” My Baby and 5&6″. Same narrative of questioning, will you be there? won’t you be like others, no doubt, one influenced the other.
Finally, we have tunes for the party rockers, Tony Montana and Faaji, the shindig moment has been unveiled, why was Dbanj not credited on this track? His back up was felt.
The first single off this project featured Ladipoe and Terry Apala, the self-acclaimed Omo Isoko. When trap meet Apala, firefighters should be called, before they came on, there was “Down To Jangilova”, a ballad with tinged of self acclaim.
Confluence project is historical, the A&R on this project must have put some yeoman work in the artists chosen, only someone with a good ear for music can do this, these collaborations were usual, they are legendary.
